Sunday Funday!

So, as planned, I met up with Lambit early in the morning in the town of Middleburg for a little bike ride. Once we arrived, I hopped in his truck so that we could scout out the route beforehand, just to make sure there weren't any insane hills we'd have to tackle. As I mentioned early in this blog, I'm not as fit as I'd like to be and I also have a semi-bum right knee so, as much as I love cycling, overly-challenging rides can put me in a bad mood faster than I'd like to admit. Thankfully, despite the occasional hill here and there, we managed to find a decent path, left the truck in the parking lot of a little church and headed on our way.

I honestly didn't realize that we'd be biking without going back to my car first, which is where I left my tennis shoes, sunscreen, and sports sunglasses, so I got off to a slightly uncomfortable start... I was riding his old mountain bike instead of my usual road bike and, because he's a foot taller than me, the frame wasn't a perfect fit. Plus, I was wearing flip-flops and they nearly flew off my feet three or four times when I lost control of the pedals while speeding downhill. Oh, and did I mention the fact that Lambit is built kind of like a Greek God...? He's gorgeous, tan, tall, muscular, lean, and incredibly fit so he takes quickly and easily to anything athletic. On the other hand, I'm about 30lbs overweight and not nearly as strong as he is. So, I get a little self-conscious at times when I'm struggling to make it up a difficult hill because, when he slows down or stops to wait for me to catch up, I feel like I'm holding him back from going as far and as fast as he'd like.

Nonetheless, despite my insecurities, I really did have a lot of fun and we got a great workout in during the 12 mile loop from the church and back. By the time we finished, we were feeling both thirsty and hungry, so we headed over to this cute little restaurant called Hunter's Head and shared a carb-y lunch of mac 'n cheese with a side of fried green tomatoes, and washed it all down with some Woodpecker Cider. The restaurant did have air-conditioned indoor seating but, because it was such a nice day, we opted to sit on the patio outdoors even though all of the tables with umbrellas were already taken. The sun and occasional breeze actually felt pretty good and it wasn't until hours later that I realized I'd gotten a little too much sun on my arms and back.

After lunch, we drove to Boxwood Estate Winery, which is one of our favourite wineries that we've visited during our courtship. In addition to having fantastic wine, the staff is also super-friendly and accomodating. We each took part in a tasting, shared a charcuterie plate and relaxed on the grounds for a bit, then decided to check out a second winery that Lambit had passed on his way to meet up with me that morning. The second winery, Cana Vineyards, was much larger and busier than Boxwood but bigger isn't always better. Their wine selection was decent but, aside from having beautiful grounds, I really wasn't that impressed. I did enjoy the fact that they had live music, though, and seemed to be very kid and family-friendly.

Once our winery tour wrapped up, we headed back into Middleburg and had coffee at a quaint little cafe called Common Grounds. We're both suckers for a tasty espresso, so we ordered two of those and a blondie to share and, despite being very mindful of my diet and trying my best now to eat healthy every day, I really didn't worry about our indulgences today. This was mainly because I knew I'd gotten in a good workout and we shared everything, so neither of us had the burden of an over-sized portion. After we'd finished our last treats of the afternoon, the most difficult part of the day was upon us and it was time to part ways...

Even though I always drive away from Lambit feeling a little sad to see him go, I'm also left with an overwhelming feeling of happiness and gratitude. It's not always easy to arrange our schedules and find time to spend together, since we both lead fairly hectic lives, but I can't help but feel special and loved after days like this, knowing that we had such an incredible time together and made new memories which we could share for years to come. It truly was a wonderful day and I couldn't have asked for anything more :)
